Once a restful stopover for pilgrims, Domaine de Châteauneuf is an old 18th Century Provençal mansion located at the foothills of the Sainte Baume range. The château was converted into a charming hotel well known and appreciated in the area throughout the 1950’s. In 1999-2000 it was completely renovated in a spirit of subtle elegance which created an atmosphere of discreet luxury.

The Beauty of Provence

This ancient residence and it’s outbuildings are niched within an oasis of greenery. The facade, with it’s original architecture, is in perfect harmony with the environment : a sober beauty, simple yet imposing, preserving the feeling of well-being in a traditional country residence.

The refurbishment of the building is tasteful and decorated with a sense of understated luxury using natural and traditional products with a strong Provençal influence.

History

In 1780, the Châteauneuf family, from Nans les Pins, built this superb property now converted into a lovely first class hotel. The owner of this domain and surrounding land, Louis-Maurice Châteauneuf, was a close friend of Barras, a member of the Directoire during the French Revolution. At Barras’ request, in 1794, Bonaparte’s family were guests at Chateauneuf whilst the latter was distinguishing himself during the siege of Toulon.
Jean-Antoine Châteauneuf from la Ciotat succeeded him until 1825, followed by Honoré-Antoine Châteauneuf from Nans les Pins. In 1858, Casimir Carles, a clerk in Paris and the nephew of Honoré-Antoine, inherited the property and became the new Landlord. He added his uncle’s name to his own to perpetuate his uncle’s memory and was called Casimir Carles Châteauneuf.
In 1919, Casimir Carles Châteauneuf sold the Domaine to a lawyer from Marseilles, Mr. Blanc. The latter in turn sold the property in 1926 to Fernand Malet, a cake maker in Toulon. Fernand Malet turned the château into a charming hotel, which has become renowned in the area.
In 1968, his son Jacques Malet inherited the hotel. He refurbished the Domaine into a first class hotel to keep up with its longstanding reputation. Jeanne Malet, his wife, carried on in the same spirit until her death in 1998.
This luxurious XVIIIth century mansion, set in the shade of century old trees inside the Golf de la Sainte Baume, became the property of Open Golf Club, already owner of the golf course. Open Golf Club fully renovated it in 1999-2000 in a spirit of subtle elegance allowing you to enjoy the unforgettable charms of the Provençal way of life.
